Village Vanguard is originally an outlandish bookstore chain but they have a few burger outlets scattered throughout the country. In Tokyo, they only operate on the west side of the city (Shimokitazawa, Kichijoji, Ogikubo…).
They serve high-end fast food style burgers (think of it as a premium Freshness Burger). Their menu includes the avocado-camembert burger, the pineapple burger or the quattro-fromaggio burger. While their burgers are not at the level of most independent venues (I find the beef patties too thin, the bun not solid enough and the whole thing lacking some tang), they are, on the whole, good enough. A lunch at Village Vanguard will make for a good experience, especially when you couple it with a nice walk in the interesting “Shimokita” or Kichijoji district. If you’re a burger purist though, you may want to try some of our top-20 players instead.
